Founded in 1927 by Cesare and Umberto Cassina, it introduced industrial design to Italy in the 1950s. The firm was a pioneer in its remarkable penchant for research and innovation, and for working hand in hand with leading architects and designers from different walks of life, encouraging them to conceive new designs – a characteristic that continues to distinguish the company today. Indeed, Cassina’s identity lies in an innovative fusion of technology and traditional craftsmanship.
In 1964 Cassina launched the Maestri collection with the acquisition of exclusive worldwide production rights to four pieces designed jointly by Le Corbusier, Pierre Jeanneret and Charlotte Perriand. Over time, this collection was expanded with iconic pieces of furniture by great architects of modern classics (Gerrit T. Rietveld, Charles R. Mackintosh, E. Gunnar Asplund, Frank Lloyd Wright, Charlotte Perriand and Franco Albini) working in close collaboration with their heirs and official foundations. Today, many prestigious designers and architects from Italy and abroad collaborate with the Cassina Contemporanei collection: Mario Bellini, Rodolfo Dordoni, Piero Lissoni, Vico Magistretti, Luca Nichetto, Gaetano Pesce, Gio Ponti and Philippe Starck, among others.
This transversal culture of absolute quality defines the uniqueness of each Cassina piece. In June 2013 Cassina acquired Simon (a historic Italian furniture brand founded by Dino Gavina and Maria Simoncini), bringing together two pioneering companies that share a taste for experimentation and the ability to express the relationship between culture and production. Cassina SimonCollezione, included in the Contemporanei Collection, brings together names of the stature of Carlo Scarpa, Marcel Breuer and Kazuhide Takahama.
